Iva Gueorguieva Interview - The Hopper Prize

Iva Gueorguieva

Iva Gueorguieva on constructing surfaces akin to stone walls, boulders, and facades.

How did you get into making art?

I grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria. In second grade I partipcated in an afterschool collage program conducted by my beloved teacher Katia Nicolova. It was my first experience using cutting as means of drawing and constructing elaborate worlds.

What are you currently working on?

I am making massive seascape paintings on unstretched muslin repurposed from materials left from my Intersection performance project. I am also making heavily collaged with gauze paintings about snowscapes populated by figures both animal and human referencing Kukeri (ancient Bulgarian spirits).

My approach is conceptual in a broad way and highly intuitive in the moment of action.

What inspired you to get started on this body of work?

The currect body of work synthesizes the tapestry paintings and the Pompeii gray paintings. I am constructing surfaces akin to stone walls, boulders, and facades as well as the surface of the ocean and the arctic which both conceal and reveal the depths of a hidden terrain.

Do you work on distinct projects or do you take a broader approach to your practice?

My approach is conceptual in a broad way and highly intuitive in the moment of action.

What’s a typical day like in your studio?

I look and look and look ….. and at some point I act.

Lee Krasner
Loiuse Nevelson
