Brooklyn, New York

Artist Statement

I am a ceramicist as well as a full-time kindergarten teacher. I create sculptural vases that blend elements of functionality, joy, whimsy, and the natural world. Each piece is hand-built, using coils of clay to form the desired shape and a banding wheel to turn the piece as I construct it. This year, I have been experimenting with designs, structures and motifs, along with glazes to help enhance these elements in simple, yet strong ways. I want to create vases that feel alive through the imagery incorporated in the piece, namely plants, insects and animals, as well as the four seasons. This is illustrated by images (01-07) . In the coming year, I plan to keep developing these ideas into larger-scale vessels and pieces that can be placed in gardens and have a timeless feel to them. A grant from the foundation would help me pursue this goal, which could also help result in a new exhibition. Work samples (08-10) are images from my most recent show “Spiral in Stone,” 2021, in New York City.
