Artist Statement
Rooted in painting, my practice examines identity, embodiment, and the lyric potential of ambiguity. I revisit historical genres such as still life, human figure, and landscape, drawing from traditional techniques—including oil methods rooted in 19th-century French academic painting—while critically reworking their legacies. As a queer woman, I engage with painting’s historical entanglements with gendered and heteronormative structures, reimagining spaces of visibility for queer and nonconforming bodies by collaborating with models from my community.
My work to date explores strategies of blurring and abstracting my subjects through covering, transparency, and colour interpretation. Early on, I questioned the materiality of paint by covering the objects and figures I depicted realistically with thick, dripping layers of paint, making the medium both subject and surface. This inquiry shaped Peintures blanches (2020–2022) and Corps recouverts (2021–2024), which revisit still life and the queer nude through achromatic subjects rendered in chromatic grays.
My current series, Transparaître (2024–present), extends this exploration with colour and transparency by depicting spectral figures, partially coated in unreal hues shaped by cangiante-like shifts. Dissolving into dreamlike monochrome landscapes and expressing the vulnerability and interdependence of interpersonal bonds, these imaginary figures open the symbolic language I plan to deepen through my future research.
