Hilma's Ghost

Brooklyn, New York

Artist Statement

Hilma's Ghost, a Brooklyn-based feminist artist collective, comprises artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray and was founded by them two years ago during the height of the pandemic. We make art collaboratively using magic, conduct free workshops and programs with occultists and healers, and engage in research that uplifts ancient and premodern knowledge systems that have been a source of personal strength and aesthetic innovation for women artists. To date, we have made 3 bodies of work together. ABSTRACT FUTURES TAROT (2021) consisted of 78 drawings, 5 paintings, and a titular limited edition tarot deck. Radical Spirits (2022) adapts the lost art of theorem painting, a form of 19th century women's work, into a new series of seance paintings. Our curated exhibition, Cosmic Geometries (2022), reimagined the history of abstraction through a mystical lens with 25 diverse and intergenerational artists. We recently published Rituals for Grieving (2022), a free pandemic handbook to aid in the grieving process. Through these various channels, our collective seeks to innovate the ways in which art and mysticism can conjure new liberatory practices for women, nonbinary, and trans artists in the 21st century.
