Artist Statement
The subject of my work is the built environment: the manmade world of concrete, cement, asphalt, brick, steel, glass, plastic, and paint; streets and buildings; fences and sidewalks; signs and power lines. I navigate the city on foot and by bus, always looking. In some frequencies, I am profoundly deaf. In the city din, I don't listen to words or music. Instead, I take in the compositions around me.
My work focuses on my home of Los Angeles County. I use acrylic gouache, a flat paint that texturally feels like LA's radiating, sun baked exteriors. Painting brings to light the unseen within the sprawl. My paintings appreciate the colors and compositions of the urban landscape as they reveal the human created habitat and our place in it.
