Artist Statement
As a photographer and wheelchair user, visibility often precedes recognition. The body is read before it is known.
UNCOOL examines how bodies are positioned within systems of visibility and representation. While certain forms of difference have become increasingly legible within contemporary image culture, disability often remains framed through caution, sentimentality, or exception. The work questions these hierarchies.
The portraits are constructed with clarity and formal precision. There is no attempt to soften or dramatize difference. Instead, the images focus on presence, on the surface of the body, and on the conditions under which it is seen. The subjects are not presented as symbols or narratives, but as individuals occupying the image on their own terms.
Grounded in a shared proximity, the encounter between photographer and subject informs the work without becoming its explanation. What remains central is the relationship between viewer and viewed.
