Artist Statement
Carolina Aguirre works across film, sculpture, installation, and painting. Through an autoethnographic lens, her work reflects on kinship, migration, and generational memory, presenting alternative narratives for belonging. Painting on the floor, she layers natural materials such as sumi ink, charcoal, calcium, and shellac in a process she likens to archaeology or gardening. From these shifting planes, which move between aerial views, cross-sections of strata, and atmospheric fields, bodies and traces emerge and dissolve. Through bodily imprints and performance, the body becomes both subject and material. Her sculptural and video works extend these investigations, engaging in dialogue through immersive exhibition-making. Together, the works create atmospheric environments that blur the physical and metaphorical, opening space for fluid, deeply personal connections.
